"And then he invented a new life for himself, taking up residence at the ragged margin of our society, wandering across North America in search of raw, transcendent experience"(Krakauer 1).
Inspiration or Fool?
In today's society we are expected to all live up to the same expectations, set the same goals, and not question the system. We are taught that the most important thing in life is to get a good job that will give us financial security so that we can start a family. Society smothers us with its ideas about the way we should live, and it makes us all drones working for the same mindless cause. McCandless went against society's norm. He had to live on the outskirts of society so that no person could interfere with what he was doing. Sure it was a tough life for him and in the end he died, but he died living his life true to himself and not to the fake standards set upon him by the rigid rules of society. He let no one else define who he was. In this way he can be seen by many as inspiration.
