"Mccandless's apparent survival, in other words, seemed to be only a three-hour walk upriver"(Krakauer 196).
Topic: Inspiration or Fool?
Although Chris went against societys views and in many ways was an inspiration it can not be helped but to think that in a way he was definitely foolish. He died when he could have lived. Just by having a simple map he would have seen that there was refuge only 6 miles away, which is a fraction of a day of walking. Even in an extremely weakened state he could have made it. It is also sad because he had plenty of opportunities when he was stronger to make it out of the bush. Chris was a fool to go into the Alaskan wilderness by himself assuming that he could make it with little to no preparation for the task that lay ahead of him. He should have looked before his trip for the quickest and safest escape route incase something went wrong. If he had done this he would have seen the three hour walking route to either the ranger's cabins or to the famed dog sledder's cabin where there was food and protection from the elements. This could have made the difference in his survival because he would have had a chance to recoup while in a safe spot.

When You Fail at Life
"His Intention was to remain in the wilderness through August. Somehow, though, he neglected to arrange for the pilot to fly him back to civilization at summer's end, and it cost McCunn his life"(Krakaeur 81).
Topic: Travel Advice
McCunn was not very good at planning a vacation. He made the mistake of not making a thorough itinerary and plan for his vacation. My advice would be too fully plan out your travel. A well planned vacation reduces your stress levels and makes the entire vacation more enjoyable. Just a little bit of work will make a mediocre getaway an absolutely incredible getaway. If you are too lazy to put alot of effort into a good plan at least make a rough outline of when and what you will be doing. The most important thing being when and how you are arriving and departing from your travel destination. This will help you greatly in remembering what you have to schedule(cough cough flight, cough cough McCunn). In most cases not planning very well could result in a missed flight or having to sleep in a creepy old hotel. Worst case scenario... you die.

Is McCandless Mclueless or a Mc-inspiration?
"And then he invented a new life for himself, taking up residence at the ragged margin of our society, wandering across North America in search of raw, transcendent experience"(Krakauer 1).
Inspiration or Fool?
In today's society we are expected to all live up to the same expectations, set the same goals, and not question the system. We are taught that the most important thing in life is to get a good job that will give us financial security so that we can start a family. Society smothers us with its ideas about the way we should live, and it makes us all drones working for the same mindless cause. McCandless went against society's norm. He had to live on the outskirts of society so that no person could interfere with what he was doing. Sure it was a tough life for him and in the end he died, but he died living his life true to himself and not to the fake standards set upon him by the rigid rules of society. He let no one else define who he was. In this way he can be seen by many as inspiration.
